Pet Safety During the Holidays: Tips from Our Veterinarians
The holiday season is a joyful time, but it can also pose unique risks for our furry friends. Here are some essential tips from Orange Grove’s veterinarians to help keep your pets safe during the festivities:
1. Rise in Chocolate Toxicity Cases: Our vets see a noticeable uptick in the number of incidents of chocolate toxicity in pets during Christmas, much more than the preceding Halloween season.
“Pet owners are very vigilant about chocolates during Halloween, which is great!” says Dr. Holly Merker, DVM and Co-Owner of Orange Grove Animal Hospital. “That same level of attention is needed during the holiday months as those same dangers are just as present. When you think of baking at home, receiving treats from neighbors and friends, … this season is just as dangerous for pets; however, it’s not one we readily identify with the same level of risk.”
2. Holiday Decorations: Tinsel and ribbons on presents are particularly problematic for cats. These shiny objects typically attract our feline friends and can lead to foreign body obstructions if ingested.
To avoid emergency trips to the vet, ensure these decorations are kept away from curious paws and quickly disposed of when unwrapping presents!
3. New Pets for Christmas: If you're giving your child a kitten or puppy for Christmas, plan ahead! Schedule that initial vet visit before they arrive at your house as new patient appointments get booked quickly for this very reason. Initial vaccines, a fecal sample test, and spaying or neutering are all services you’ll want to ensure happen quickly, so your new pet gets a healthy start and grows up strong and safe.
By following these tips, you can ensure a safe and joyous holiday season for both you and your pets. Remember, taking a few precautions now can prevent a lot of heartache later!
